Despite attendances being limited due to Covid restrictions, week 21 had plenty of excitement and developments at both end of the table.

With their 2-1 victory at Celje, Koper took over the leadership of the table. Celje started brightly and after a lucky deflection, the ball fell kindly to leave Sokler with a side-footed tap-in into an empty net to give Celje the lead. However, this was the cue for Jamaican Kaheem Parris to deliver an outstanding performance, first with a fabulous left-footed finish from 20 yards to bring the sides level at the interval, and then another delightful curling left-footed 20 yard effort clinched the points with 5 minutes remaining.

Olimpija recorded their second consecutive 1-0 home win which was enough for Maribor to lose top spot and make Olimpija live contenders, but it was a controversial match. Ognjen Mudrinski looked to have given Maribor the lead in the 65th minute but VAR ruled out the effort due to an offside earlier in the move. Maribor’s humour was then not improved when after a VAR delay of almost 4 minutes, a penalty was awarded for a handball, which Nukic duly despatched to give Olimija the three points.

After falling 0-2 behind with 10 minutes to play, Bravo fought back to claim a draw 2-2 against Mura. The home side took the lead just after the half hour when Daku’s clever back-heel presented Kous a simple finish from 12 yards to give Mura the lead. However, Kous quickly went from hero to villain with a red card, which looked a little harsh, but the points looked to be heading Mura’s way when Sturm snuck in un-opposed at the far post to tap home a second after a cross along the face of the goal.

However, Kerin’s decisive header, which perhaps the keeper could have done better to keep out, gave hope to Bravo with just under 10 minutes to play, and then in added on time Kurez was on hand to finish a flick on from a corner to rescue an unlikely point.

Tabor fully deserved a point at Domzale, with Koderman giving them the lead at the interval after a marvellous twisting run that created the space to fire a shot across goal to give his side a half-time lead. Tabor looked to be in control of the match until a soft second yellow card to Mavretic reduced Tabor to ten men. Domzale made the extra player count, and the equaliser came after an unfortunate deflection own goal from a corner. Despite some late pressure, Tabor held on to take a point from the encounter.

In the match between the bottom two sides in the league, Radmolje ran out convincing 4-0 winners over Aluminij to move out of the bottom two places. On his debut after signing from the Croatian Second Division, Tomislav Mrkonjic grabbed two goals, the first a smart finish for just inside the area after skipping past Nkama, the second a sliding finish at the far post from a corner.

Calusic pounced on a deflection for Radomlje’s second and Kregar rounded off the scoring after a mazy run. In truth the winning margin could have been much greater, and it is looking grim for Aluminij.
