Dukla Prague 0-2 Mlada Boleslav ( att : 782 )

November 29, 2014

Yes, that is correct. For a match in the Czech Top Division between 6th and 4th, only 782 people turned up ( including Mr and Mrs Fatbear and our niece  !! ). Mind you it was bitterly cold…….

Dukla normally get around 1,300 for run of the mill games, and had only lost one home match so far this season, but the opening of the Prague Christmas Market at the same time may have keep a few away.

Juliska is home to Dukla Prague but is also one of the main Athletics stadiums in the Czech Republic, Olympic Gold Medalists Roman Sebrle and Jan Zelezny trained here.

After taking tram 8 to the end of the line ( stop Podbaba ) getting to the ground entrance involves a walk up a steep hill. It’s a five minute walk down, but took me 10-15 minutes to walk up ! I subsequently learnt that Bus 131 stops right by the entrance so will take that next time……

Entrance was 140 KCS ( about £4 ) and a half litre of beer cost 30 KCS ( just over £1 ! ).
There is a 30 KCS deposit for the plastic beer glass, but this is refunded when you return it

When we went to Dukla two years ago, the programme was a free broadsheet newspaper sized couple of folded pages. Now they have a modern colour programme, and they charge 20 KCS.

There is a small wooden hut that sells Dukla related accessories,so for 1250 KCS, fans of Half-Man, Half Biscuit are able to purchase a Dukla Prague away shirt if they wish !

The stadium has one large impressive stand along one side of the ground, with a very small terrace around the rest of the ground. Being an Athletics stadium there is obviously a running track between the pitch and the stand, which does little to help the atmosphere in the stadium. The floodlights are extremely striking though !

The 30 or so away fans were housed on the open terrace opposite, and there were no queues at the drink stands.
We stood at the back of the large stadium, and enjoyed good views of the match, but it is a long, long way away from the action. Did I mention it was also very, very cold ?

The game did little to warm up the hardy spectators. An early goal to the visitors with a poor defensive header picked up by Jiri Skalak, who stepped inside a weak challenge and shot past the keeper, who probably could have done more to keep the shot out.

A few minutes later a Dukla player was put clear, but the play was stopped to give Dukla a free-kick. At that point I thought this will definitely be an away win !

Dukla had their best chance just before half-time when a corner to the near post was flicked on, but the forward at the back post shot straight at the keeper. Early in the second half they had an even better chance but from less than 6 yards out and with most of the goal open, the shot was again straight at the keeper. With about 20 minutes to go, Boleslav created a chance exactly the same as the one Dukla missed in the first half, but this time the player, Tomas Wagner, poked it past the keeper into the corner.

At that point we decided to leave, and catch the tram back to somewhere warm for food and more beer. I don't think we missed much !
